In what is probably a first in the Indian television market, Bharti Airtel has announced that the company has signed a deal with Dolby Laboratories to bring the company’s famed Dolby Digital Plus surround sound technology to Airtel’s Digital TV DTH HD service. This will allow Airtel DTH HD customers to enjoy high definition content with up to 7.1 channels of premium quality surround sound.
Dolby Digital Plus is one of the most recent technologies from Dolby Laboratory that is also compatible with the older Dolby Digital 5.1 channel surround sound format.
While this is definitely something to look out for, you have to take this news with a grain of salt for the moment. The HD television segment in India is yet to mature and Nat-Geo and Discovery are some of the few channels that actually support High definition video output.
But considering the way the competition is heating up, expect many more television channels to spice up their offerings in the coming few months.
